Our thoughts...
Every book in The Original Sinners series has a different
feel and approach while staying true to the characters and story.
Each book has its own unique flare while the sum of the series remains
cohesive. All four book in The White Years take place in the past and present.
The first three books tended to visit both fairly equally, whereas The Queen is
centered mostly in the past with the present only coming into play in the
beginning and the end, which caused a bit of a challenge for my old-woman
brain. When the story moved back to the present at the end of the book I found
myself needing to reread a bit of the beginning to help reset the scene.
I love this series. I have loved (almost) every moment and
will read anything Tiffany Reisz writes. With that being said, there was just
something about this one that didn’t hook me as much as I anticipated. I also
found myself walking away from this book on several occasions and I haven’t
been able to pinpoint my reason for doing so. Was it my mood? Because I didn’t
want the series to end? Or was I just not as ensnared as I have grown
accustomed to be from the others in the series? My instincts are to blame it on
me but when I look back, I just don’t think this one grabbed my attention as
much as the other books in the series.
The Queen, like the other books in The White Series, gives
the reader a new perspective on the characters we love so dearly. We are taken
to a time when Nora and Søren are not
together but still deeply in love. A time when Nora is finding her true self
and inner-strength. A time when Eleanor found Nora. The story is quite
beautifully told. It has a heart-warming feel to it that slows things down a
bit. I think that might be at the root of my delayed reading. With that said, I
did enjoy the more reflective and nostalgic tone; It just didn’t encourage
quick reading.
When all is said and done, I enjoyed this book. My
procrastination is not very indicative of my feelings towards the tale. I am happy with the way the series ends, with
where some of my favorite characters ride off into the sunset. This series is
definitely one worth reading and rereading for a long time to come.
*On a side note, I noticed the ebook has a higher price point
than the average and is almost as much as the paperback. If this deters you, I
recommend checking your local library’s ebook catalog for this and the other
books in the series. I originally found The Siren through my library and
checked out several of the books in the series.
