Our thoughts...

I was excited to hear Callie Dalton narrating because she really does have a great grasp of Zapata's stories and characters. She adds a lot to the story and I recommend checking her out.

But the story...I wanted to love it.

I like the premise and I have been enjoying Zapata's catalog but this one not only follows many of the same plot lines as the other books by this author but even managed to recycle a catalytic moment we encounter in another book and I was not impressed. There are also inconsistencies that caught my attention. Nothing big but enough to notice. I think my biggest complaint is that a particularly impactful event was made a big deal and then not mentioned again until towards the end when it was quickly glossed over with one word. It was a side story that entangled with the main characters, but it held a lot of weight when initially brought up. There was one other incident that occurred, and we never heard details of why it happened or how that impacted people. I like closure.

I still like the author but this one fell flat. I truly believe a big problem is that I have been listening to them all back-to-back, so the similarities are blindingly obvious. I don't think I'd notice as much if I had broken them up. I’ll revisit two of the five I’ve listened to in the future and that’s pretty good in my book.
