Our thoughts...

I went into this book with zero respect for Sean due to his behavior in The Hooker and the Hermit. He was a complete jerk and seemingly proud of it. That couldn’t be further from the truth, though, and I quickly came to love the poor oaf. “We accept the love we think we deserve” (Stephen Chbosky, Perks of Being a Wallflower) which can lead to denying the love we truly deserve. Sean grew up in a house with little love and feels he deserves little love as an adult. Cue the hugging! Seriously, that’s all I wanted to do once his true-self became clear. He is like a lost little puppy looking for someone to scratch his belly. I also loved seeing a strong male character lacking in sexual prowess. Not every dreamy man is a natural sex god and Sean Cassidy is a prime example. He is enthusiastic but he isn’t oblivious to reality, either.

Lucy is an amazing female lead. She is smart, witty, and strong. I love how she is sex-positive and is confident enough with herself to express her needs with Sean. She doesn’t take crap from people (except her mother) and is full of spunk. Even though she is tough and confident, she is still vulnerable, which makes her very real. She has insecurities and fears just like everyone else. Confidence does not equate to emotional immunity and the reader gets to experience all sorts of feelings through her eyes.

The Player and the Pixie is low on overly dramatic scenes. The drama that is present is not exaggerated for the sake of creating a distraction for a slow story or lack of content. Adults behave like adults and when things get hairy and people deal with what is thrown at them. No one wallows for months on end playing the role of the martyr with flare. The story is well-developed and the characters act in a respectable fashion. It’s hard to believe these aren’t normal occurrences in romance but it sure is refreshing when I find it.

LH Cosway and Penny Reid are a dynamic writing duo! They complement each other well and also blend well. The chapters alternate points of view, which can sometimes lend itself to a disjointed feel, especially with multiple authors. That is not the case here; the story is cohesive and flows very well. Their stories are smart, funny, and charming, just like their characters, and I’m excited to read further collaborations from these two wonderful women.

Our thoughts...

In Flight is a short story so don’t expect well-developed characters; that’s not what this story is about. This story is about hot sex between two strangers and eventually a bonus twin brother. Summer and Ben are strangers on a plane that very quickly evolve into something more. I’m talking The Flash-quick. But that’s okay because this book isn’t meant to create emotional connections to these people, but rather what these people do. And what they do is quite…enticing. You really need to go into this story knowing you’re getting a quick fix or you’ll miss out on the whole fun of it.

The narration started off promising. Sierra Kline has a nice voice and a good cadence. What got me, and what I could not get past, was that Summer’s inner monologue sounded drastically different from her actual voice. The voice in her head sounded great; very “independent, sexually aware woman” but her actual voice was mousy. For some strange reason, Kline decided to make Summer sound meek and insecure whenever she opened her mouth. This difference annoyed the dickens out of me. Other than that, though, Kline does a fine job doing the other characters and building intensity.

Grab In Flight if you are looking for a “quickie” (it’s currently free on KU) but I would recommend reading over listening.

Synopsis
David Taylor is the most possessive, dominant, alpha male I have ever met. Technically he's a stalker. He is bossy, needy, nasty, and so very sweet. He is everything I need him to be. I love him so much it scares me. Austin James is mine. Mine to take care of. Mine to spoil. MINE. The first time I saw her, I knew she was MINE. I saw a reflection of myself in her. Broken. Damaged. Guarded. I can't explain the depth of my feelings or why it happened so fast. I just know she's mine and I'll do anything to keep her.
