Our thoughts...

"[This book] is like a surprise tackle-hug from a small child; completely unexpected and full of awesome. "

I love learning about new things from Penny Reid. She always teaches me about things I have never been drawn to know but am grateful for learning afterward. Just the other day I read an article that mentioned Bitcoin and I understood the magnitude of what was being discussed thanks to Penny and this series. It’s practical knowledge for the curious mind. I’m completely fascinated by the new knowledge and the relationship. It’s not one or the other; neither overshadows. The multiple facets of this story complement each other and add great depth to the overall story. The two main characters, Marie and Matt, are both intellectuals in their own right and, in order for the story to match the life they would most likely live out in the real world, it needs to be intellectual, too. Penny has a way of smarting-up a book (as opposed to dumbing-down) in a way that feels organic and welcoming. I always feel like the “lessons” I learn add to what I’m reading rather than take away. Nothing is thrown in for show or fluff; each “lesson” holds significance and feels necessary.

Can we replace the intimacy found in a relationship with paid services or artificial intelligence (AI)? Marie is a brilliant journalist who dives into her investigative reporting with full-on moxie. This leads her to try out services such as professional cuddling, meditative orgasms, and professional dry-humping. What?! These services are real and gaining momentum, people. Matt is an engineer who is tackling the AI end by working to develop a robot to provide comfort and a stable source of affection for people in need (e.g. foster children). How can you be anything but intrigued by these two and their gradual falling in love-ness?

Dating-ish is a Forever Favorite for me. I’ve already read it twice and I’m planning on listening to the audiobook as soon as it releases towards the end of the week. The writing is classic and will withstand the test of time. There are no gimmicks, no melodrama, no purposefully obtuse damsels. The characters are real and easy to relate to. The story is compelling and informative without feeling overwhelming. And the humor gets me every darn time. If you aren’t convinced yet, here is one of my favorite quotes from the unedited ARC version:

"I mean, if you’re going to send a woman a dick pic, at least send something worth seeing. Not a gherkin dwarfed by hairy potatoes."

How can you not laugh at that?! Seriously, folks, go pick up Dating-ish; you won’t be disappointed. Reid’s unintentional one-liners and seemingly random (yet totally not) thoughts are what make her stories come alive and feel real. Those are the moments I find myself unable to contain a guffaw. The comedic timing is brilliant and catches me off-guard nearly every time. It’s like a surprise tackle-hug from a small child; completely unexpected and full of awesome.
