Our thoughts...

This book is sweet. From the beginning to end, it’s sweet. Not sweet of the saccharine variety, that kind that’s just too much to take, but of the heart-warming, feels good kind of way. I think this is one of those books that will bring on a different reaction depending on where you are in your life. I’m fortunate enough to be married to my best friend so it warmed my heart and reminded me how lucky I am. I think readers who have lost loves or are searching for their one-and-only, this may hit deeper and harder.

This story is tragic in regards to the past but the present is far more motivating and productive. There really aren’t any big surprises in the story but it is well-written and well-developed. The characters are complex, as is the story, and there’s a steady flow that made me want to keep reading. Carlino doesn’t use any big gimmicks to rope the reader in but the emotions are the hook. I could feel the love and the hurt and the pull of hearts to each other. That is what fuels this story. The emotions are strong without needing a billboard pointing it out for you. There is a lot of showing instead of telling and I LOVE that. I felt so much with this book and that is what sold me on it.

Swear on This Life is worth the read for the emotional pull alone. It’s just a solid book all around. If you’re looking for something that isn’t too sexual or too angsty or too anything, this is for you. It’s a good book that will hit on a little bit of everything and leave you feeling happy you read it in the end.
