Our thoughts...

Okay…third book in and I am not impressed. I could tell this was an earlier work of the author’s because it didn’t have the polish, the flow, or the development of the other two I have read so far. Was it enjoyable enough? Yes. Was I captivated? No. In fact, I often spaced out through this one but I’m pretty sure I didn’t miss much.

Under Locke is stretched out. A lot. It could use some condensing to keep things flowing better. I had issues with the flow in general, but particularly when a scene would be started, then jump back to events leading up to that event, and then jumps right back into the present with a lot of turbulence causing it to get muddled. It was frustrating on occasion.

There was also a fair amount of hypocrisy between characters. I know there is in real life because people don’t always realize what they’re doing, but it got old. One moment a character would be complaining about someone being closed off and a liar and the next minute that same person would be closed off and lying. I just happened too much for me to give a pass to the characters.

The relationship between the two main characters is a bit questionable if you look too closely but if you let things slide you’ll be just fine. It’s just…a little rough and probably unhealthy. I looked past it an enjoyed it but I can see issues when I look back.

The narrator is the same as the past two and, as before, she is consistent and sells the story well. Her inflection demonstrates she knows the story and makes listening more enjoyable.

Despite all of that, I did enjoy this story enough. Not as much as Kulti or Winnipeg but enough not to feel like I wasted my time. It definitely has the classic Zapata feel but less refined than I have quickly become accustomed to.
