Our thoughts...

Tension ~ Mature ~ Gut-Wrenching

My gut was tight almost the entire time I was reading this book. I was anxious, tense, and on edge. I need part three. Like, yesterday. Before I get into this book I want to preface things by saying Heat does have a cliffhanger but it is actually refreshing in this case. I typically don’t like cliffhangers but this one feels so necessary. I would love to have kept going immediately into Captive but I’m so glad I didn’t have the chance because the break has allowed me to breathe and relax. It’s an appreciated respite.

The thing that stands out in this series, and especially in Heat, is how Kaitlyn and Martin behave. They have insecurities and issues like anyone else but they aren’t the whiny, drama-driven college kids that run rampant throughout the New Adult category. Those types of characters can be fun to float along with at times but it’s nice to read about two college-aged individuals who, through it all, have a strong head on their shoulders. They have real teenage angst and relationship-related emotions but those aren’t over-played or dumbed-down for the sake of added drama.

I really don’t want to give too much away in regards to the insights we’re given into Kaitlyn’s and Martin’s history and upbringings because it could ruin a few things. With that said, we do gain quite the perspective on why Kaitlyn is closed up and tentative and why Martin is defensive and rough. I knew Martin’s childhood wasn’t pretty but I had no idea. No. Idea. The mother in me wants to give that boy a hug and cookie.
“My heart broke a little as I wondered whether he’d ever experienced genuine affection from another person.”
Kaitlyn and Martin are both naïve in relationships but in such vastly different ways. Heat explores their differences, their insecurities, their needs, as well as their internal struggles to put themselves out there for another person. I swear I could talk about this story forever but I don’t want to unfold the story prematurely. Know that you won’t be disappointed in the arc of the story; it is a lofty journey that ends at a high point. You will want to go bang on Penny Reid’s door by the end of Heat but once you take some relaxing breaths you’ll realize the break is for the best. It’s only a separation from the story, after all, not a divorce.

Now, will someone PLEASE give me a copy of Captive?!

Tour: Heat by Penny Reid

Elements of Chemistry: HEAT is part 2 of a 3 part series (65k word novel) and ends in a cliffhanger.

**Blurb contains spoilers if you haven’t read Elements of Chemistry: ATTRACTION**

Four days left.

Private beach (…and boat).

Not so invisible girl.

And maybe less of a jerk-faced bully than originally thought.

What’s the worst (or the best) that could happen?

Kaitlyn is finding life outside of the science cabinet of obscurity to be quite illuminating …and so are her pants. When things heat up between Kaitlyn Parker and Martin—previously known as the jerk-faced bully—Sandeke, she places her trust in the one person she never thought capable of earning it, let alone keeping it safe. Fortunately or unfortunately for Kaitlyn, where she gives her trust she can’t help but also give her heart.

But how will the world beyond the sanctuary of their new-found connection react to their relationship? Soon senators, chinless billionaires, and elements beyond Martin and Kaitlyn’s control want to weigh in on the young couple’s future.

Navigating the chaotic inferno of new love might be more than Kaitlyn bargained for, and much, much more than her trust—or her heart—can handle.

About Penny Reid
SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing). By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.
