Our thoughts...

Hilarious ~ Charming ~ Fun

I’m only going to say this once. It’s something I have never said in my entire life. This book made me LOL. That’s right folks, I said it. I laughed out loud in that spontaneous “I don’t care who is around” kind of way. Multiple times. And it garnered some sideways glances.

Penny Reid writes like my friends and I talk and that makes me love her characters even more. The Winstons and Drew Runous charm the pants right off of me. Ashley is strong and courageous before, during, and after tragedy strikes. Drew is quiet and reserved while being strong and sensitive. And I'm not sure which Winston brother is my favorite. Cletus is full of surprises, Jethro is the quintessential oldest brother, Billy is like an onion with all of those layers, Roscoe is cheeky, and you can't go wrong with twin gingers full of heart!

The narration is done by Joy Nash, with whom I was previously unfamiliar with. I was a little hesitant when she started reading because she was more intense than I anticipated but I quickly fell in love with her. Her twang is just as charming as the characters she portrays and she reads with a southern urgency, like a musician playing on the front of the beat or a person leaning forward while power-walking. My only significant criticism is that the male characters were initially difficult to distinguish from each other. This became easier as the tale progressed but I’m not sure if that’s because they became more distinct or because I learned to recognize them better.

All in all, Beauty and the Mustache is a fun read and an even more enjoyable listen. The Knitting in the City series does not need to be read in order (I’ve been jumping around) but starts with Neanderthal Seeks Human, which is currently free.
